Marin has been away from New York for so long that a rumor spreads there that she has died. Meanwhile, when Elmo's town elder passes away, their sister city ends its association with the town right before their New Moon Festival. Marin seizes the opportunity to put herself to use by finding the town a new "mate." Also, the clothes that she had shipped to her from New York have mysteriously ended up on every other woman in town.

Season 1, Episode 4

The town of Elmo hosts a huge birthday celebration for Marin, but the unexpected arrival of her fun-loving younger sister, Liza, conjures up some unexpected insecurities for Marin. Meanwhile, now that Ben has asked Theresa to move out, tensions rise between her and Sara, whom Ben is dating. Also, Buzz finds an airplane, missing for 26 years, belonging to Patrick's father, causing Patrick to hope that the father he has never known could have survived and might be alive somewhere.

Unbeknownst to Marin, Jane leaks an excerpt from Marin's new book on men to The New Yorker magazine. Now, Marin is forced to defend her career to Jack, the unwitting subject of her work. Meanwhile, when her car breaks down, singer/songwriter JEWEL (herself) stops into the Chieftain bar and reunites with Theresa, her former band mate. Also, Patrick's mother, Celia, and Buzz's mail-order bride, Mai -who is technically Patrick's stepmother--have a showdown for the role of "top mom." JEWEL performs her song "Good Day" with backup vocals from series star SARAH STRANGE.

now I find myself So Moved near to tears, by the shows...  the voice of Ms. Heche speaking words of wisdom I believe she believes!

During Thanksgiving week, Marin goes home to New York, where Jane has arranged for her to meet with various editors about publishing her new book. Marin is thrilled to be back in familiar surroundings, but she misses her life back in Elmo, particularly Jack. He is ready to make his move with her, but an unexpected twist causes trouble with his plans. Meanwhile, Patrick must choose between spending Thanksgiving with Annie in New York or with his new family, and Ben hopes Theresa will help in the preparation of their annual "Orphan Thanksgiving" for Elmo residents.

A series of emotional events that could determine Marin and Jack's future continues. While anxiously awaiting Marin's return to Elmo, Jack is caught off guard when someone from his not-so-distant past comes to town with a secret. Meanwhile, Annie is still upset with Patrick that he neglected her at Thanksgiving dinner. Jane and an Elmo resident spend some romantic time in New York. Theresa and Ben wonder what's next for them. And Buzz faces a medical crisis.

It's the winter solstice in Elmo, meaning there's only about five hours of daylight. In the aftermath of discovering that Jack is falling in love with her--and that he has a pregnant girlfriend named Lynn --Marin decides to take Jane's advice and just wait for Lynn to leave before confronting Jack. Meanwhile, Patrick tries to win Annie back, but she insists that he should be less reliant on his mother. Celia has a tryst with someone unexpected. Jane wonders if she wants to keep her long-distance relationship alive. And Marin finally chooses a new publisher.

Suffering from writer's block and trying to get over Jack, Marin volunteers to help at Elmo's fundraising rummage sale. Her publisher, Stuart, makes an unexpected visit to help critique the second chapter of her book. Meanwhile, Jack tries to pick up where he left off with Lynn. When Sara comes back to town, she is surprised to see Ben and Theresa back together. And Patrick's storybook proposal to Annie goes awry.

Marin is excited to move into her rustic mountain cabin, but she soon discovers that her new place is not quite ready for her when she encounters some unexpected visitors. Jane unintentionally neglects her boyfriend while supporting Marin's move. Patrick becomes concerned that he will not be able to give Annie the wedding of her dreams. Celia finally admits to dating her boss, Dick. Theresa has mixed feelings about Sara helping at The Chieftain while Ben recuperates. And Lynn senses that Jack may still have feelings for Marin.

Enjoyin watchin MEN IN TREES and thinkin about bein in the show and seein all the people I worked with there it occurs to me that it's the kind of show that draws a person in and gives a person a feeling of belonging and longing to be with those people, to be in Elmo...  I know we wrote this constantly to ABC management...  now, years later, it is stll true and each episode is a reconnection and a reminder... 

Now that Jack's ex-fiancée has left town, everyone in Elmo assumes that Marin and Jack will get back together. When Mai's cousin, Lucy, an ice skating star, visits from China, Mai wants her to stay, so George offers to marry her -- much to Terri's dismay. Meanwhile, Annie and Patrick have trouble planning their wedding. And once Celia discovers that her boyfriend, Dick, is much younger than she thought, she wonders what the consequences will be.

Marin finds romance returning to her life as Jack gives her gifts, and her publisher tries to pick up where they he left off with her. She also juggles being maid of honor for Annie and best man for Patrick, who both want her to plan their dream bachelorette and bachelor parties. Meanwhile, Sara struggles with minister Eric's policy of no sex outside of marriage. And recovering emotionally from his heart scare, Ben considers purchasing a professional hockey team.
